INTRAOCULAR LENSES

INTRAOCULAR LENSES

Intraocular lenses (IOLS) are artificial lenses used to replace the eye’s natural lens during cataract surgery. These advanced lenses restore vision and can be customized to meet your unique lifestyle and visual needs. At swayam eye hospital & retina centre, we offer a range of both regular and specialized iols to provide optimal results for every patient.

Types of Intraocular Lenses

1. Regular (Monofocal) IOLs

  • Monofocal iols are the standard option used in cataract surgery.
  • Designed to provide clear vision at a single distance (near, intermediate, or far).
  • Best for patients who are comfortable using glasses for specific tasks, such as reading or driving.
  • Benefits:
    • Affordable and often covered by insurance.
    • Excellent clarity for the selected focus distance

2. Specialized (Premium) IOLs

    • Advanced lenses offering additional features for enhanced vision and reduced dependence on glasses.
    • Types of specialized IOLs:
      • Extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOLs: Clear vision at all distances. Provide a continuous range of vision, especially for intermediate and distant tasks, with reduced glare. Extended depth of focus iol do not have transition zones & hence provide clear distant & near vision without glasses & is free of side effects of multifocal lenses like night vision glare & altered contrast sensitivity. Thus, these lenses provide higher quality of vision & are preferred lenses even in diabetic & highly myopic patients where multifocal & trifocal lenses are relatively contraindicated.
      • Trifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs): These are advanced lenses designed to provide sharp, seamless vision at near, intermediate, and far distances after cataract surgery.
      • Multifocal IOLs: Provide clear vision at multiple distances (near, intermediate, and far), reducing the need for glasses.
      • Toric IOLs: Correct astigmatism along with cataracts for sharper vision.
  • These specialised or premium lenses minimize dependence on glasses or contact lenses, making them an excellent choice for patients seeking a lifestyle upgrade
  • Tailored to address specific vision issues, such as cylindrical powers, astigmatism or presbyopia.
